Ayurveda emphasizes preventative and healing therapies along with various methods of purification and rejuvenation. Ayurveda is more than a mere healing system; it is a science and an art of appropriate living which helps to achieve longevity. It can guide every individual in the proper choice of diet, living habits and exercise to restore balance in the body, mind and consciousness, thus preventing disease from gaining a foothold in the system.

According to Ayurveda, every human being is a unique individual manifested through the five basic elements - space, air, fire, water and earth. Vata (space + air), pitta (fire + water) and kapha (water + earth) are called the tridosha, meaning the three humors of the physical, mental and emotional body. Every individual constitution has its own uniquely balanced ratio of V-P-K. The balance of V-P-K is the natural order, thus when this balance is disturbed, it creates imbalance which brings about disorder or disease.

The external environment has a constant effect on the internal environment governed by the tridosha. The wrong diet, lifestyle, incompatible food combinations, habits, seasonal changes, repressed emotions and stress can all act to change the balance of the tridosha. According to the nature of the cause, vata, pitta or kapha undergo aggravation or derangement which affects the digestion and produces toxins. These toxins enter the blood stream and are circulated throughout the body, blocking the channels. This accumulated toxicity, once well established, will slowly affect prana (vital life energy), immunity, and cell metabolic energy and result in physical, mental and emotional symptoms leading eventually to disease.

By helping the body eliminate toxins disease can be prevented. To stop the further production of toxins Ayurveda suggests herbs, a proper diet with appropriate lifestyle, habits and exercise. In order to rid the body of existing toxins it is necessary to administer a proper cleansing program such as Pancha Karma.
